VRI & Airporter Team Up to Create Biogas Bus

biogas bus projectBellair Charters / Airporter Shuttle is collaborating with the Vehicle Research Institute (VRI) at Western Washington University to outfit an Airporter Shuttle vehicle with a methane biogas fuel system.

Why is this REVOLUTIONARY?

Biogas (methane) is a fully sustainable and renewable fuel, made from typical dairy farm waste (manure and other). No petroleum needed. The fuel emissions from a biogas-burning vehicle are so low that they are 100 times below the federal limit.

With a digester located at Darryl Vander Haak’s farm in Lynden WA, the VRI will collect the gas and further refine it prior to fueling the Airporter Shuttle vehicle. This will be the first biogas-powered commercial passenger vehicle in the country.

“We can turn cow power into horsepower,” says Eric Leonhardt, director of the VRI.

The VRI has already made this system work in a passenger automobile, the award-winning Viking 32.

The Future Looks Bright

This project could certainly change the future of transportation and sustainable energy. Using biogas made from farm waste would reduce our dependence on foreign oil, dramatically reduce our carbon footprint, and create incentives for other farmers to install digesters to produce electricity and/or fuel.

More information to come! For more information about the VRI, visit their website at http://vri.etec.wwu.edu/

30th Anniversary 1985-2015

1985. It was a simpler time; cell phones were a new invention, and Back to the Future was leading the box office. E.M. “Red” Wickkiser, a pilot and resident of Bellingham, Washington, saw a need and acted upon it. Red purchased a business license and a single 10-passenger van and, along with his son Larry, started offering twice-a-day shuttle service from Bellingham to Sea-Tac Airport. It was immediately popular and Red added more vehicles, a full-time staff, more drivers and equipment.

Fast-forwarding 30 years to 2015, Bellair Charters / Airporter Shuttle now operates a fleet of over 50 vehicles, mainly full-size motorcoaches, employs 100+ people, and offers frequent service to/from Sea-Tac Airport from Bellingham, Yakima, and all points in-between. We also offer premium charter bus service to anywhere your group wants to go. We've transported over 3 million passengers and counting.

And we're still connected to our roots. Red and Larry Wickkiser, though no longer the owners, continue to be great friends of the company. We're still locally- and family-owned, and espouse the same values and commitment to quality that Red and Larry instilled 30 years ago.

30 YEARS - THANKS FOR RIDING WITH US!
